Just south of Branson, on either side of highway 65, Hollister is tucked into the hills of the Ozarks, bordered by the White River to the North, and Table Rock Lake to the West, home to Table Rock State Park on the West side of town, and the Branson airport to the South. In the early 1900, there was a ferry to cross the White River from the North, before the railroad arrived in 1906, and it was a popular area for hunting and fishing, with many orchards and vineyards that still inspire the Hollister Grape and Fall Festival to this day. There were even Golf Links back then, and today, 4 different golf courses are nestled into the surrounding countryside, one of which is a Tiger Woods designed course.
With the arrival of a train depot in 1910, settlers started arriving in the area, thanks to advertising done by a local realtor and businessman, William Johnson. As roads and more people began coming to the area, Johnson began developing Hollister as an English Village and promoted the area as a tourist and retreat destination, with banks, hotels and other necessary buildings, many of which still exist today along the Downing Street downtown area and nearby neighborhoods. Farther South is another historic building, Big Cedar Lodge, purchased by Johnny Morris, who founded Bass Pro Shops in 1972. The old building has been preserved, and a new Big Cedar Lodge has been built, with upscale developments in the vicinity that have enhanced and inspired growth in the southern part of Hollister.
To the South of Downing Street are also more modern shopping and retail amenities, as well as the main campus of College of the Ozarks, and to the East are the majority of the K-12 Public Schools. Residential homes are dotted across this area, and everything from single family homes in town, to mountain view acreage, and luxurious lakefront properties, can be found in Hollister. Its unique history and proximity to Branson has instigated a resurgence of interest and improvement in Hollister, echoing their motto, "Build, Grow, Thrive".
