Nixa is 15 miles south of Springfield on highway 160 and 30 miles north of Branson, neighboring Ozark, and at the crossroads of highways 160 and 14. The area was first settled by farmers who located their farms along the wooded streams in the area, and when a post office was opened, a town meeting was held to decide on a name for the new community. A suggestion was "nix" because the community was "nothing but a crossroads”, and an "A" was added honoring an early resident and blacksmith from Tennessee, giving it a unique name. Incorporated in 1902, Nixa has since become one of the largest suburbs surrounding Springfield, one of the fastest growing towns in Missouri, and has one of the highest standards of living in the area.
In addition to the traditional amenities, and an extensive K-12 public school system, Nixa has been the home of a 72 acre solar farm since 2017, providing approximately 10% of the city's power needs annually. The 4 parks in Nixa provide ample opportunity to appreciate the natural surroundings during leisurely walks or bicycle rides, as well as hosting playgrounds, a variety of ball fields, a dog park, and the Community/Aquatics Center. Jason Bourne/David Webb from the Robert Ludlum Novels and films was even fictionally born here.
Nixa is also well known for its Annual Sucker Day, started in 1957 by Finis Gold, mayor of Nixa, a barber and local American Legion commander, and has been a long standing community tradition ever since then. Locals often close up shop or skip school for the day to go "grabbin’ for suckers", and the fish are then frozen until enough are available for the big fish fry.
Held annually in May, it's a family-friendly event held on Nixa's Main Street, with live entertainment, local crafts, sucker fish and other kinds of food sold by vendors. Proceeds from Sucker Day activities help fund local causes such as scholarships for graduates from Nixa High School, Project Graduation, and Nixa JROTC, embodying Nixa's motto, "Neighbors committed to an exceptional quality of life"
